{"id":618,"date":"2011-06-20T12:16:32","date_gmt":"2011-06-20T12:16:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.compositestoday.com\/?p=618"},"modified":"2013-11-01T15:00:09","modified_gmt":"2013-11-01T15:00:09","slug":"acgs-prepreg-used-in-antarctic-ice-sheet-mapping-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.compositestoday.com\/2011\/06\/acgs-prepreg-used-in-antarctic-ice-sheet-mapping-mission\/","title":{"rendered":"ACG\u2019s Prepreg used in Antarctic Ice Sheet Mapping Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prepreg material from Advanced Composites Group have been used in an exciting project by Kansas University\u2019s school of Aerospace Engineering<br \/>\n<!--more--> <\/p>\n<p>KUAE Plan to build a fleet of Meridian unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) destined to monitor the flow of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica.<\/p>\n<p>KUAE selected ACG\u2019s MTM45-1 prepreg material  for the Meridian\u2019s wings, empennage and fuselage structure because its combination of properties makes it ideal for the out-of-autoclave (OoA) production of aircraft primary structures. Indeed, MTM45-1 has a flexible curing temperature, high performance and toughened epoxy matrix system optimised for low pressure vacuum bag processing.<\/p>\n<p>MTM45-1 may be cured at temperatures as low as 80\u00b0C (176\u00b0F), allowing the use of low cost tooling for prototypes and short production runs. OoA process cost savings for aircraft manufacturers can equally be applied to other less critical structures such as fairings, which are normally produced via autoclave curing. MTM45-1 can also be autoclave cured, meaning that it can be used for more critical structures.<\/p>\n<p>A flame-retarded variant of MTM45-1 (MTM45-1FR) is also available and has been shown to meet the requirements of FAR 25.853.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" width=\"560\" height=\"349\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v-3pcvfkgGU\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe width=\"560\" height=\"349\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v-3pcvfkgGU\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Under a 5-year, $19 million research grant from the National Science Foundation to Kansas University\u2019s Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS), KUAE&#8217;s mission was to provide an aerial platform for ultra-sensitive ice-penetrating radar developed in Kansas University\u2019s Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department.
