The blades are set to be installed on the second prototype of the Siemens 6 MW offshore wind turbine which will be constructed in Denmark’s Østerild test station.

To construct a blade of this size Siemens use their own patented IntegralBlade method. The blade is made in a single piece using glass fibre reinforced epoxy resin and balsa wood, using this method the blade doesn’t have any seams or bonded joints which makes the blade extremely robust.

Heavy blades are subject to higher loads and require stronger nacelles, towers, and foundations, the huge rotor, which measures in at 154 metres needs to withstand huge air masses as it’s hit by the energy of 200 tonnes of air per second when the wind blows at a speed of 10 metres per second.

<img decoding="async" class="" data-attachment-id="3894" data-orig-file="https://www.compositestoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/PN201204-02_300dpi.jpg" data-orig-size="1535,2126" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.8","credit":"Siemens AG","camera":"Canon EOS 5D Mark II","caption":"Als einziger Hersteller von Windturbinen stellt Siemens Rotorblätter nach dem patentierten IntegralBlade-Verfahren aus einem Guss und ohne Naht- und Klebestellen her.
