{"id":15972,"date":"2020-07-09T09:03:03","date_gmt":"2020-07-09T08:03:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.compositestoday.com\/?p=15972"},"modified":"2020-07-09T09:03:05","modified_gmt":"2020-07-09T08:03:05","slug":"tohoku-university-nec-composite-material-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.compositestoday.com\/2020\/07\/tohoku-university-nec-composite-material-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Tohoku University and NEC Team up to Accelerate Composite Material Development"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Tohoku University&#8217;s Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Information Sciences and NEC Corporation are jointly working on a materials integration system that would accelerate the development of carbon fibre reinforced plastics (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.compositestoday.com\/tag\/cfrp\">CFRP<\/a>) for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.compositestoday.com\/category\/aerospace-aviation\/\">aerospace<\/a> sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Japan currently produces a wide range of composite materials but require a lot of time and expense to develop. This new R&amp;D, conducted under the Japanese government&#8217;s Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP), aims to reduce the cost and time needed to develop composite materials for next-generation aircraft by up to 50 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve this, the team will create an integrated system capable of digitally developing CFRP for aircraft structures using simulation tools developed by Tohoku University, and NEC&#8217;s SX-Aurora TSUBASA vector supercomputer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, by implementing simulation codes on a supercomputer that can analyse mechanical responses from a molecular level to the aircraft&#8217;s wing and fuselage, the processes of material selection and design can be performed at high speed and at multiple scales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"250\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.compositestoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img-Tohoku-composites-today.jpg?resize=600%2C250&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15973\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.compositestoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img-Tohoku-composites-today.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.compositestoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img-Tohoku-composites-today.jpg?resize=300%2C125&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.compositestoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img-Tohoku-composites-today.jpg?resize=500%2C208&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.compositestoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img-Tohoku-composites-today.jpg?resize=293%2C122&amp;ssl=1 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><noscript><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.compositestoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img-Tohoku-composites-today.jpg?resize=600%2C250&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15973\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.compositestoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img-Tohoku-composites-today.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.compositestoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img-Tohoku-composites-today.jpg?resize=300%2C125&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.compositestoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img-Tohoku-composites-today.jpg?resize=500%2C208&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.compositestoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/img-Tohoku-composites-today.jpg?resize=293%2C122&amp;ssl=1 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With this system as a common platform, it is expected that tailor-made material development can more effectively meet the demands of airframe manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the results from scientific research in composite materials, Tohoku University has already developed a variety of simulation tools for CFRP, together with companies participating in Japan&#8217;s Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program. The integrated systems developed in this R&amp;D will be applied to aircraft as well as a wide range of other vehicles in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simulation programs for materials integration systems will be vectorised and parallelised for the SX-Aurora TSUBASA vector supercomputer in order to significantly reduce the execution times of the simulation programs. This research emphasises cooperation with participating companies in order to accelerate programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SX-Aurora supercomputer consists of vector engines that perform high performance simulation programs and a vector host that performs a wide variety of processes. This R&amp;D utilises NEC&#8217;s supercomputer technologies and system construction know-how to systematise simulation programs with the SX-Aurora supercomputer.
